December 26th - The Feast Day of St. Stephen
The day after Christmas is St. Stephen's Day, which commemorates the namesake of our congregation - Stephen, a deacon of the early Christian Church. In the early days of the church, the apostles selected seven men to help serve the needs of the early Christians. The most notable was Stephen (see Acts 6:8). Stephen argued with the Jewish leaders and was arrested. Following a lengthy speech where he recounted centuries of Jewish history and condemned the leaders of the Jewish church, the members of the Sanhedrin became enraged and they stoned Stephen to death making him the first Christian martyr.
